Residencies

LG has been invited to and attended site-specific artist residencies that directly align with and support the development of her multi-disciplinary art practice. Key residencies are outlined below, including their outcomes and the benefactors, funding bodies, and sponsors who have supported her consciousness-based practice.

Air Program Arctic Culture Lab, Greenland

Grace has been invited to undertake a two-month residency at Arctic Culture Lab in Greenland, from 1 July to 31 August 2027, supporting her ongoing exploration of the relationship between the divine and the natural world. During the residency, she will advance several interconnected immersive art and film projects spanning Greenland, Iceland and Antarctica, tracing the migratory path of the Arctic tern from the Northern to the Southern Hemisphere.

An Experimental Cinematic AI Art Installation

Over a decade ago, I travelled to Antarctica after winning a graduate travelling scholarship, and photographed extraordinary icebergs on 35mm film that are now extinct. At a time, when I struggled to find my place in the world, water profoundly changed my understanding of freedom, creativity and the innate wisdom of nature. Within water, I witnessed something that could create extraordinary beauty without seeking power or authority outside itself. For me, this became my key to finding happiness and a desire to live, after many years of just wanting to leave the planet.

Fast forward to now, in the age of AI, the icebergs I witnessed have long since melted. But I asked the question: What if we could bring one back to life and ask it questions about our planetary future through the illusion of artificial intelligence?

Words of Wise Water is an interactive art installation in which an extinct iceberg returns as a slowly melting sculpture or digital apparition, revealing a mysterious feminine presence speaking from within it. Does she have our answers to our future?

ICELAND Residency

ICELAND | Research and Development Residency 2026

Established in 2008, NES Artist Residency is an international multidisciplinary arts residency situated in the remote coastal village of Skagaströnd, Iceland. Surrounded by dramatic volcanic landscapes and the North Atlantic Ocean, NES supports artistic experimentation, cultural exchange, and site-responsive creative research.

LG was selected for the residency to advance the development of her immersive documentary WATER and accompanying memoir Words of Wise Water, interconnected projects exploring water as a living expression of planetary consciousness and memory, generously sponsored by Create NSW.

Outcome: Although extreme weather disrupted her initial travel to Skagaströnd, LG began her Icelandic research journey by exploring the crystal blue ice caves accessible in the region during September and October. She then undertook an additional residency at SÍM in Reykjavík before finally travelling to Skagaströnd to complete her residency at NES. This research supported the ongoing development of multiple new immersive works, including the creation of an art installation that seeks to bring back to life an extinct iceberg she photographed on 35mm film as a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts and recipient of the Wallara Travelling Scholarship.

Institutional Support: NES Artist Residency, SÍM Artist Residency, and Create NSW.

FRANCE | Artistic Research and Development Residency 2018

Situated in the French countryside in Haute-Marne, Château d’Orquevaux is an international artist residency bringing together multidisciplinary artists, writers and creatives from around the world. The historic château provides an environment for artistic experimentation, cultural exchange and the development of new work. LG was selected for the residency and awarded the Denis Diderot Artist Residency Scholarship, supporting the continued development of WILD ONE, a multidisciplinary project exploring feminine identity, consciousness and the reclamation of personal sovereignty through moving image, photography and literature. Outcome: The residency supported the ongoing development of WILD ONE as an expanding body of work encompassing photographic artworks, moving-image installations and interconnected literary stories. The château's historic setting provided an environment for creative research and experimentation, furthering the evolution of the project across multiple artistic disciplines. The wider WILD ONE body of work has received public recognition, including finalist selection in the Ravenswood Australian Women's Art Prize and the presentation of WILD ONE: ASCENSIO at the Adelaide Festival Centre in 2024 and in Condenast's magazine, The World Of Interiors. These earlier exhibition outcomes demonstrate the project's established artistic trajectory and its continued development through international residency opportunities. Supported by: Château d’Orquevaux Denis Diderot Artist Residency Scholarship.

ANTARCTICA | Wallara Travelling Scholarship 2002

The Wallara Travelling Scholarship, awarded by the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), is a prestigious graduate award supporting outstanding emerging artists in the development of their professional practice through international travel and artistic research. Following her graduation from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (High Distinction), LG was awarded the Wallara Travelling Scholarship in 2002, recognising her achievements as one of the institution's leading graduating artists. At just 21 years of age, LG became the youngest artist to be sent to Antarctica in 2003, undertaking an extraordinary journey to photograph the continent's icebergs and remote polar landscapes on 35mm slide film. Outcome: The Antarctic expedition marked the beginning of a lifelong artistic inquiry into water, consciousness, memory and humanity's relationship with the natural world. The original photographic collection became the foundation for Words of Wise Water, an evolving multidisciplinary body of work spanning photography, literature, documentary filmmaking and immersive art. More than two decades later, LG is revisiting this historic archive through contemporary technologies, including an immersive installation that seeks to resurrect an extinct Antarctic iceberg she originally photographed in 2003. The work forms part of her continuing exploration of the relationship between ancient natural intelligence, human consciousness and emerging technologies. Institutional Support: Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. Scholarship: Wallara Travelling Scholarship (2002).
